Day 8 August 23 Disembarking

I have to applaud Norwegian Cruise Lines efforts to try to make you think that you should relax and enjoy the 'final' day of your cruise - work out, take a swim, go bowling, etc. - perhaps some morning people can do that, but for me the final day is all about the struggle to wake up early, grab some breakfast, and wait around on lines to get off the ship. Norwegian is MUCH better than other cruise lines in disembarking thousands of passengers - they don't insist that you vacate your cabin at the crack of dawn, they don't have you waiting in long lines stretching around the ship, and you don't leave forgetting about the good times that you had in the stress of the moment. We were told that our luggage had to be in the hallway by 2am (not the 8pm that some other cruises has insisted upon!), and there was no set time that we had to vacate our cabin.

Mount Rainier Seattle Cruise AlaskaOur baggage tag color was due to be called at about 9am, so we headed up to the buffet around 8:15am to have breakfast while watching the waterfront bustle below us. When our color was called, we headed for the elevators, and of course had to wait because everyone else headed for the same elevators. We ended up standing in line along the ships deck for about 10 minutes, but the security agents checking our passports were right on the gangway, so once we got past them, all we had to do was to collect our luggage (and there were plenty of porters around to help) and hand in your customs declaration without even pausing as you walked out. Not bad at all! With a smooth disembarkation like that, I had enough energy to enjoy the sights in Seattle – and count the days until our next cruise.
