The town of Skagway - which has a year-round poplulation of just 800 people - nearly bursts at the seams when there are several cruise ships in port. Skagway hearkens back to the days of the gold rush, and the buildings, street cars, and costumed guides all put you in the spirit of times gone by in this National Historical Park.
The ships pull right up to town, and just steps from the ship you will find yourself on lovely shop lined streets with passing horses and trolleys.
One of the most popular shore excursions is to take the famouse "White Pass Railroad" - which pulls up right next to the cruise ships - up through the pass to the Yukon. Along the way, you will pass magnificent scenery - including waterfalls and breathtaking vistas - which will certainly give you a new appreciation for the many who travelled this way in search of gold.
The White Pass Railroad brings you the the town of Carcross - formerly Caribu Crossing - in the Yukon for a stop before heading back down the mountains to Skagway.
