Ketchikan

Ketchikan Alaska is an absolutely charming coastal town, and while the weather most likely won't be very pleasant when you visit (Ketchikan receives over 300 inches of rain per year!), you are sure to enjoy the facinating and unique things that Ketchikan has to offer.

Two things that you will surely want to see while visiting Ketchikan are salmon and totem poles. You can't miss the totems - there are several prominant ones located in the 'downtown' area, and if you would like to see and llearn even more, you can visit :

• the Totem Heritage Center, which is located within walking distance of town. The Totem Heritage Center has preserved a major collection of authentic totem poles from the 1800s. Also, there is a salmon hatchery and eagle rehabilitation center just across the street.
• Totem Bight State Park is located about 8 miles north of Ketchikan, and you can take a short hike through a forest to view a collection of authentic totem poles and a ceremonial clan house.
• Saxman Village is about 2 miles south of Ketchikan. Shore excursions bring guests to this popular attraction, which includes live entertainment, Tlingit culture, and a visit to a Carving Center to learn more about the art of carving totem poles.

 

A visit to Creek Street is a must during your time in Ketchikan. Creek Street used to be the "Red Light District" of Ketchikan, but now is the home to many upscale craft shops and galleries. The stream runnung along Creek Street is teaming with salmon through the summer, and watching the swim - or leap - upstream through the rapids is a sight you won't see just anywhere.
