Juneau is the capital of Alaska. It is a very unique capital, in that it is the only state capital which is inaccessible by road from the rest of the state.
Juneau is charming, and a walking tour of the downtown area - including shops and government buildings - is an enjoyable way to spend your time here. For a fabulous birds-eye view of tcruise ship harbor - as well as the magnificent surrounding area - a ride on the tramway up to Mount Roberts can't be beat,
The Juneau Icefields are unbelievably large - you can't even imagine unless you are standin g right on top of them! There are several shore excursions which include a helicopter ride to the Juneau Icefields - some combined with a sled ride, salmon bake or city tour.
Just outside of Juneau, the Mendenhall Glacier is the most accessible glacier to a city in the United States. A bus ride there costs only $7 per person, and you will have fabulous views of the glacier, as well as the opportunity to follow some trails bringing you closer to the wildlife - including salmon, bears and eagles - found in the area.
